Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Breast augmentation is also known as breast implant surgery or a boob job. This surgery involves placing silicone or saline implants into the breast to enhance size, shape and volume. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we are asked during breast augmentation consultations.
When should I consider Breast Augmentation?
There are many different reasons why women consider breast augmentation.
- If you believe your breasts are too small for your body and you want to increase the size and fullness
- If you want to bring proportion to your figure
- If you feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting, low-cut tops and want to boost your confidence
- If you feel one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other and want to create better symmetry
- If you feel your breasts have become smaller or less firm after you’ve had children or lost weight
Who’s a good candidate for Breast Augmentation?
- You are not currently breast feeding or pregnant
- Your breasts are not extremely saggy
- You are over the age of 18
What type of implants should I choose?
Choosing your implant is based on personal preference and Dr. Prince’s recommendation in which implant will best help you achieve your desired look. The two types of breast implants Dr. Prince offers are either saline-filled or silicone gel-filled (both types of implants have a silicone outer shell).
Silicone filled breast implants, also known as “gummy bear” or “form stable” implants, are filled with a cohesive gel made of crosslinked molecules of silicone, which makes them slightly thicker and firmer than traditional silicone gel implants. This enables them to hold their shape better, even if their shells become broken.
Saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, the same fluid used in an IV.
During your consultation with Dr. Prince you will have the opportunity to touch and feel the different types of implants.
What size implant should I choose?
The best way to determine what implant size is best for you is to visit our office for a consultation and sizing session with Dr. Prince. During your sizing session Dr. Prince will take measurements of your breast/chest and you will try on a variety of implant “sizers,” which are similar to real implants. Sizers are a great way to try on implants before your surgery to see how different implants fit in relation to your body shape. This will allow you to confidently decide on a size range that best flatters your figure. For many women, this is the first time that they can visualize their breast augmentation.
What will my incisions look like?
There are several types of incisions commonly used for breast augmentation, but Dr. Prince typically uses an inframammary fold (IMF) incision. This type of incision is placed just below the breast in the crease that naturally exists. Any scarring can be easily hidden, and studies show that this type of incision reduces the risk of post-operative complications. Dr. Prince is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon, trained and experienced in performing surgery so incisions are minimal and will be well-concealed after your surgery.
What will my recovery be like?
You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home from surgery and stay with you for 24 hours while the anesthesia wears off. You will be able to shower the day after surgery, but you’ll have to wait until your incisions are healed to swim, take a bath or submerge in water. You may experience soreness, bruising and swelling for a few days after the procedure, which can be managed with medication. You should wear a front close sports bra for 4 weeks to provide support for your breasts. Exercising, housework, and strenuous movement will be restricted for 4 weeks while you heal. Following these activity restrictions is especially important to ensure you have the best result possible.
